The Tornai family has been dealing with winemaking since 1946 on Somló Hill, a mountain that rises sharply out of the flat surroundings. The founder, Endre Tornai started viticulture and winemaking on a nearly one-acre vineyard. Today the cultivated land measures 60 acres and it is the third generation now that is engaged in the everyday work of the winery.
Vine stocks were planted between 1997 and 2003 and later in 2009. Varieties planted before 2003 include Juhfark, Furmint, Hárslevelű, Welschriesling, Korona, Sárfehér and dessert wine. Varieties planted between 2003 and 2009 are: Pinot gris, Zeus, Zenit, Pinot blanc, Sauvignon blanc, Irsai Olivér, Gewürztraminer, Hárslevelű and Csomorika.
Besides respecting traditions, they use state-of-the-art winemaking and processing technologies. As a major winery in the Somló region and with its several decades of experience, the Tornai Winery plays an important role as an initiator and supporter of the cooperation between local wine producers.
The cellar has been built in compliance with the latest technological requirements. Following the gentle processing of grapes, steel tanks are used for controlled winemaking carried out with the help of reductive technology.
After a 12-hour soaking on skin, best selected raw materials are fermented in 500 l oak barrels, then mellowed for 8 to 10 months, in accordance with tradition. The stainless steel tanks have a total capacity of 1 million litres, out of which a quantity of 4,200 hl can be cooled. The rest area is suitable for the storage of 75 Hungarian oak casks.
The cellar has a bottling plant where our own wines are bottled along with those produced by a number of the region’s other winegrowers.
The wine cellar’s event hall, with capacity for 120 people, is suitable for hosting conferences, weddings or company events. Cold and hot dishes are available by prior appointment
Other services: bike rental (provided by the Tourist Destination Management Organization of the Bakony-Balaton region), hearing induction loop for hearing impaired persons, program organization based on individual needs (events coordinator: Karola Prémus)
The winery has a number of partners among well-known wine marchers and restaurants such as Gundel, Balaton Borkúria, Hilton, Budai Borszalon or Akadémia Klub.
Their wine museum presents the mount’s rich history, as well as the centuries-old tools essential for viticulture in cabinets.
